Fire Protection in Port of Miami Tunnels
The Port of Miami Tunnel is a freeway tunnel that directly connects the Port of Miami to freeways through Watson Island to Interstate I-395. Nearly 16,000 vehicles travel to and from the Port of Miami (POM) through downtown streets every weekday.
Truck traffic represents 28% of this number (source: PB Americas 2009 Traffic Study). Existing truck and bus routes restrict the port's ability to grow, raising costs for port users and presenting safety hazards.
The POMT is a public-private partnership (PPP) designed to transfer the responsibility of designing, building, financing, operating and maintaining (DBOFM) the project to the private sector.
Public Sponsors are Miami-Dade County-Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)-City of Miami.
The project was launched in 2010 with the commencement of work on Dodge and Watson Islands while the tunnel boring machine was procured and built.
The tunnel boring rig and hauling equipment were assembled at Watson Island and began excavating the eastbound tunnel towards Dodge Island in November 2011. In July 2012, the eastbound tunneling was completed when the tunnel boring rig tunnel erupted at Dodge Island - Port Miami. Within 3 months, the tunnel boring machine was repositioned and launched from Dodge Island and began tunneling west to Watson Island.
In May 2013, removal of the westbound tunnel was completed when the tunnel boring machine at Watson Island blew up.
